A recent survey showed that a vast majority of Americans support legalizing cannabis. Forty five percent support legalizing it for medical and recreational purposes, while 37 percent support legalizing cannabis solely for medicinal purposes, according to a recent Harvard-Harris poll. When combined, this means that 86 percent of American adults support legalizing cannabis in some form. Only 14 percent of the country opposes legalization. I thought it might be fun to compile a list of things that have a lower approval rating than cannabis.
A recent poll showed that Donald Trump’s approval rating is at a solid 47 percent, which is pretty damn bad, but better than it was around Christmas. Support for cannabis legalization is more than ten points above president’s. Trump’s numbers are actually on a bounce from 39 percent; his numbers went up after threatening North Korea. Trump said during his candidacy that he would leave cannabis legalization up to the states, but this went out the window the minute he appointed drug warrior Jeff Sessions as head of the Justice Department.
This Gallup Poll shows that Congress had an approval rating of 20 percent last July. Another more recent Gallup poll shows that the Congressional approval rating dropped four points to 16 percent, which is hilarious. I bet they get down to five percent before Halloween. Congress has repeatedly voted down proposed measures to legalize cannabis, and recently voted down a bill that would have allowed the VA to recommend cannabis to its patients.
The mainstream media is responsible for spreading a great deal of anti cannabis propaganda during the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. News outlets spread various false talking points about cannabis and cannabis users, including the lie that cannabis was a gateway drug. This did nothing to help their credibility. Public trust in the mainstream media is at an all time low, where 32 percent say that they have “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of trust in the media. This poll was taken last fall. I’m certain the numbers have changed.
Americans’ trust in the police is at a 50 year high, but it’s still not as high as the percentage that support cannabis legalization. Fifty eight percent of whites answered that they had “quite a lot of confidence” in police officers, compared to only 29 percent of black Americans in another poll. Police terrorized communities for decades during the failed war on drugs, and continue to do so by shooting unarmed (usually minority) citizens. I certainly don’t trust the police.
The Democratic party has an even lower approval rating than Donald Trump, which is not surprising considering they lost to him, and continue to misstep and muddle their way to possibly losing the midterm elections later this year. Currently, the Democrats have an approval rating of 47 percent, over the GOP’s 45 percent
