Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) said in an interview this week that it would only be a matter of time until cannabis was legalized throughout the US. As he put it, it was “not a matter of if, but when,” in an interview with NJ Cannabis Insider.
Why is Cory Booker so Optimistic?
Booker said that he had been in conversations with lawmakers from other legal states who strongly oppose Jeff Sessions’ medieval attitude towards cannabis and his plan to enforce federal prohibition laws in legal states. “For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction,” Booker said. “More Republicans are saying, ‘Let the states do what they want to do.’ This is a really important tipping point.
Booker’s Marijuana Justice Act, which would repeal federal prohibition throughout the US, is slowly gaining traction in the Senate. Very slowly, actually. Only Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) have lended their support to the bill. Booker doesn’t expect that the bill will see any support from Republicans in Congress, but he is confident that he will get somewhere with it. Republicans are all about state’s rights after all.
Senator Booker isn’t the only one with a bill that would repeal cannabis prohibition. Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) is currently working on a similar bill making its way through the chambers of the House. That bill is expected to garner more support. It’s unlikely that the current Congress will vote to repeal prohibition, however midterms are coming and a lot of seats are up for grabs.
