Well, the fact is that CBD truly does help manage all of these listed ailments, and more! That’s why everyone’s so excited –but the question still remains, how do you use CBD oil?

This system, responsible for cell-to-cell communication, helps regulate memory, mood, and most importantly, pain.

The human endocannabinoid system works is through a network of CB1 and CB2 receptors that act as messengers to the mind. When CBD enters your blood stream, it helps regulate dopamine, serotonin, and your own naturally produced cannabinoids. Via regulation, it affects CB1 and CB2 activators, essentially reducing the amount of “I’m in pain” messages that your brain receives.

That’s all well and good, but how do you use CBD oil for pain relief? Well, according to, the best application method for treating chronic pain is taking a 2.5-20mg dose of CBD oil orally. The most precise way to do this is to use tinctures. Unlike most other methods of application, tinctures come with measurement pipettes, allowing you to know exactly how much CBD oil you’re getting into your system. This precise method of intake regulation allows you to have full control over the substance and how you react to it.

The only downside of tinctures is their delayed onset, typically taking 30-60 minutes to reach full effect. If that seems like too long of a wait, an alternative for getting immediate relief is vaping. While this is more harmful to the lungs and less precise, your pain will disappear almost immediately after inhalation.

Both methods are advisable for treating pain and can work wonders, but what if your pain is concentrated in a specific area, like in your joints? For those who suffer from chronic inflammatory diseases, a different application method might be more suitable for assuring long lasting relief.

While vapes and tinctures work great for providing fast relief for general pain symptoms, arthritis and other inflammatory diseases require long lasting results. For several years, scientists hypothesized that CBD oil can be used topically to reduce pain in specific areas of the body. Back in 2016, a clinical trial was conducted confirming their belief.

The 2016 study conducted by the University of Kentucky successfully showed that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for inflammation and pain relief without any evident mental side effects. This and many other studies have led to the incorporation of CBD into all kinds of topical products. Currently on the market are CBD infused patches, balms, soaps, and even bath bombs!

Though topical treatments take a while to kick in, once active they release a steady wave of CBD into the bloodstream. This gradual release can provide several hours of inflammation and pain relief. According to, transdermal patches –which are similar to topical treatments, can even last up to 1-2 days.

The slow onset and long lasting potential of this application method means that it can easily be incorporated into morning or evening routines. Pain prevention can now be as simple and as fast as brushing your teeth!      

So, how much should you use? The recommended dose for those dealing with inflammation is approximately 20mg for mild-to-moderate symptoms. Doses of 50-100mg are quite common for those with extreme arthritis pain however. Don’t be alarmed if your required dose is on the high end, CBD is not addictive and has been shown not to cause any physical or mental damage through high intake or prolonged use.

Also, like the CBD packed into vapes and tinctures, topical CBD products don’t contain any THC and will not get you high. What they will do in addition to reducing pain is calm your nervous system. That sounds like a great solution for ridding oneself of anxiety and depression too, right? Yes, actually. However, vapes, tinctures, and topical may not be the best CBD solutions for addressing mood related issues.  

Taking CBD Oil for Anxiety and Depression

When it comes to the question of how to take CBD oil for mood regulation, the answer might be deceptively simple. You might be thinking that a quick puff from a vape pen can easily get rid of that anxious feeling, so why bother with anything else?

Well, while you may hold your brain accountable for all of your rotten feelings, recent studies have uncovered a surprising connection between your stomach and your mood. According to Harvard Heath Publishing, your gastrointestinal tract is highly sensitive to emotion. Your feelings of anger, sadness, stress, and anxiety can all cause GI disorders such as heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome. Once these digestive problems are triggered, you will inevitably fall into a vicious cycle of mood affecting diet and diet affecting mood.

Thankfully, CBD is sold in a wide variety of edible forms, treats that will keep your gut active and your mind calm. Depression Alliance, for example, mentions gummies as an excellent choice for self-medicating, both for their delicious flavor and their soothing effects. This form of edible is slowly metabolized by the enzymes in your stomach, causing a delayed onset but long lasting relief from anxiety and depression symptoms.

Similarly to taking CBD for inflammation, taking the substance for anxiety and depression treatment has been proven to not be habit forming. Also, unlike traditional antidepressants, CBD does not blunt your emotions. Standard SSRIs, SNRIs, and other drugs can take up to 3 weeks to get used to, all the while causing you an immense amount of discomfort.

CBD, on the other hand, can be taken at any time and activates within 30-60 minutes. The compound may make you feel a bit sleepy, but it will not cause the kinds of digestive problems and insomnia that is typically associated with starting or stopping medication. As for dosage, Depression Alliance recommends the following, depending on what you’re dealing with:

  • For Anxiety – you may need anywhere between 10-50mg of CBD. 10mg is best for treating mild to moderate social and general anxiety disorders. Higher doses are best used for relief from panic attacks.
  • For Depression – for melancholy or mild depression, 20mg is a great starting dose. But most depression sufferers begin at around 50mg.

While CBD is a good choice for coping with depression and anxiety, it’s important to mention that the substance is for helping regulate symptoms. CBD does not cure depression and should not be substituted for counseling.
