On the surface Benjamin Thomas Wolfe seems like any other congressional candidate running in Illinois. He’s a former FBI official, he teaches at a university and he owns a business. There’s just one thing. He also really likes to smoke herb. He likes ganja so much so that he posed with a joint in a new campaign ad this week.
Who is this Guy? He Sounds Awesome!
Wolfe is running as a progressive Democrat to unseat incumbent Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL). His campaign promise? Legalizing recreational cannabis in the state of Illinois. In an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, Wolfe had this to say, “As a cannabis user, I think it’s important we get out front and talk about it,” Wolf said. Is it likely that he will win? Perhaps. After all Democrat Phil Murphy campaigned for governor of New Jersey on the platform of legalizing cannabis in the state of New Jersey. Oh yeah, and he won handily.
Wolfe continues, “We realize that cannabis can bring billions of dollars to the state, it’s medicine for millions of people around the country, it changes criminal justice reform and personally I think it’s a wonderful recreational substance as well.”
Wolfe is not only an enthusiastic cannabis connoisseur, he also happens to be a successful business owner, as he owns the Logan Square restaurant park. He also teaches at Roosevelt University and East-West University. District 5, the district Wolfe is running in skews toward the younger population, with an average constituent age of 33. This makes Wolfe’s chances of winning pretty high.
Wolfe is no stranger to running seemingly controversial ads. He recently ran a video where he expressed his support for banning assault weapons, all the while posing with an AR-15.
If Wolfe wins a congressional seat in the state of Illinois, it will start to look pretty obvious that campaigning on legalizing cannabis is a winning strategy, and more candidates will begin to do the same. Then, who knows?
