Everywhere you look these days, you see people talking about vaping cannabis. There is certainly no shortage of articles all over social media and the blogosphere about why you should vape instead of smoke. Hell, I’m pretty sure that I wrote one fairly recently. So, is all of this hype over vaping killing bongs? Are vapes overtaking bongs as the piece du jour?
The first time I used a vape, it was pretty underwhelming. The Volcano had just come out and a friend of mine had gotten one. I was super stoked to try it out because I love trying out new ways of consuming my cannabis. My hopes were dashed when I took my hit; it tasted like burnt popcorn and I didn’t get nearly as high as I would have smoking from her two foot Graffix bong, which is what we normally would have done. Needless to say, I did not immediately fall in love with vaping. I figured it would be a short-lived fad at best. Vaping as a trend would run its course, and then people would go back to smoking their herb.
Vapes are Taking Over
I could not have been more wrong. Fast forward a decade later and vapes have taken over the world, it seems. According to Business Insider, the vape industry was worth 3.6 billion in 2015 (this also includes e-cigarettes). This number is expected to grow now that more states, including California, have legalized cannabis.
The reason why vapes are becoming the piece du jour? Medical cannabis patients for the most part. Many of the people who use cannabis medicinally can’t smoke for health reasons, or refuse to smoke because they don’t want to be labeled as a stoner. Now that there are so many different ways to consume cannabis, they are opting to vape. Vaping is giving a lot of sick people hope and a better quality of life, which is so amazing to watch.
Have We Seen the Last of the Bong?
So yes, it looks like vapes are the new piece du jour, but does that mean that we’ve seen the last of the bong? Not even close. There will always be a contingent of cannabis enthusiasts (such as myself) who love the classic bong, especially as glass blowing techniques continue to advance. When it comes to consumption methods, there are some that completely eschew combustion, and there are others who don’t have a preference either way, as long as the method works. Don’t get me wrong, I love my vape, but there will always be a place in my heart (and in many other stoner’s hearts) for the ever reliable bong.
